How Aporeto Helped E-Xact Safely Transfer to the Cloud

Aporeto Spotlight is a monthly series where we chat with our team members about product updates, guiding principles, process walkthroughs, and anything under the sun. Behind every Aporeto team is a group of passionate individuals ready to take on security challenges, draw on diverse experiences and creative thought, and apply unintuitive approaches to create value for our customers and blaze a new path in our industry.

Aporeto’s co-founder Amir Sharif sat down with Marcus Heese to talk about his role as Solutions Manager and the key challenges faced by Aporeto customers. Marcus knows Aporeto’s product like the back of his hand and has in-depth experience with customers.

The Challenge Faced by Enterprises

Marcus stressed that the major challenge faced by enterprises is not getting to the cloud securely and smoothly. With the variety of cloud vendors and automation tools out there, it’s easy for enterprises to have a presence in the cloud. The challenge is securing those applications once they are there. This was the challenge faced by E-Xact, and it is where Aporeto comes in.

Tackling Compliance Requirements

Customers face a variety of compliance issues. Depending on the vertical, different customers will have different compliance requirements. Marcus explained that not only do E-Xact have to be compliant, maintain visibility, and have vulnerability management – they also have to be compliant with the pin and card industry, as well as data security standards. E-Xact create separation between different functions in their applications, including between front-end data processing and the actual databases that house the customers’ credit card information. With Aporeto, E-Xact was able to create separation for those different parts of the application while maintaining security.

Aporeto gave E-Xact the capability to label their applications service components accordingly. Wherever those services were located, Aporeto was able to maintain the network separation between those components.

Aporeto is a Zero Trust security solution for microservices, containers and the cloud. The Aporeto platform protects cloud applications from attack by authenticating and authorizing all communications with a cryptographically signed identity assigned to every workload. Aporeto alleviates reliance on un-manageable error-prone IP whitelist policies. A distributed homogeneous security policy is enforced per workload independent of network or infrastructure configuration, enabling uniform security orchestration across multi-cloud environments.
